An epic tale about the enduring hope of love and the devastating brutality of war, set amid the Italian occupation of Greece during World War II.

Synopsis

Cephallonia, 1941. Bright village beauty Pelagia is betrothed to simple, boyish Mandras , who has gone off to fight in Albania. As the Italians invade the island, Pelagia is drawn to the charming, musical, life-embracing ‘enemy’, Captain Corelli. But their love seems impossible when the Greek partisans (including Mandras) organise resistance and the Germans brutally take control of their paradise.

John Madden's picture looks splendid - how could it not? - and the battle scenes in the final reel are managed with elan. The Guardian
