Oliver James is Chief Scientist at DNEG. For the last 27 years, he has been involved in creating technology to realize some of the most demanding visual effects in film, from pioneering work on blue-screen compositing systems to physically-based animation, photogrammetry, stereo reconstruction, virtual production, facial motion capture, and applications of deep learning to problems in VFX.

Oliver led the development of DNEG’s Gravitational Renderer, which enabled the creation of DNEG’s Oscar and BAFTA-winning visual effects for Interstellar. A champion of science, he has applied these methods of imaging black holes to connect people with astrophysics, collaborating with Kip Thorne, Hans Zimmer & Paul Franklin to create the audio-visual celebration of art and science, The Warped Side of the Universe.
