Celebrating ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’ at DNEG

Supporting full and equal access and participation for women and girls in STEM-related fields

February 11th is International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and we are excited to celebrate across our studios!

Today we’re honouring women and girls in STEM — that’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Every day across our global studios, these disciplines come into play to help us create movie magic.

Recent studies continue to show an underrepresentation of women in the visual effects industry. While a number of systemic changes are needed to address this troubling reality, we know that encouraging women and girls to follow their dreams in STEM-related fields is a strong path towards a better and more equal future. We’ve looked inside our studios to hear advice from our team about pursuing a career in STEM, visual effects and animation. Watch the video below to find out more!

DNEG’s President, Global VFX Production, Erika Burton recently gave her thoughts on encouraging women and girls to apply their passions in science towards a fulfilling career in STEM, visual effects and animation:

You often hear the misconception that STEM-based disciplines just aren’t for women or girls – and it’s simply not true. VFX and animation is a diverse industry that benefits from all kinds of perspectives, and there are a wide variety of roles across many departments at DNEG – and in the whole industry – where everyone’s experience is welcomed and valued. No matter your gender, there’s room for you to bring your point of view and your talent to what you’ll create in your career. Don’t let other people’s biases, or preconceptions, scare or discourage you – don’t listen to them! It’s not always easy, especially when you’re starting out, but be fearless and create your own trajectory. You can make an incredible impact.

– Erika Burton, President, Global VFX Production

We believe in our ability to transform the future of storytelling, and as an industry we won’t realise our full potential unless women and girls are supported and encouraged to follow the career paths that they choose. Here at DNEG, we’re proud to foster an environment that encourages innovation through excellence in creativity and science.

Whether you’re a budding scientist or aspiring artist (or both!), we could have a place for you on our team. Check out our open positions page here!
