National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

LEARNING ABOUT INDIGENOUS CULTURE, EXPERIENCES AND ISSUES

National Day for Truth & Reconciliation at DNEG

Last week, for Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, our teams took part in a learning session on Indigenous culture, experiences and issues organized by DNEG’s Indigenous Voices Group and led by Emma Roumanas, HR Administrator and Chair of the group.

Occurring on September 30th each year, Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the Indigenous children who lost their lives at residential schools across the country, as well as their families and communities. The day commemorates the tragic and painful history, and ongoing impacts, of residential schools as a vital component of the reconciliation process.

In our internal session, ‘How to start learning about Indigenous Culture, Experiences and Issues’ representatives of DNEG’s Indigenous Voices Group created space for a deeply heartfelt, educational and enlightening conversation about Indigenous communities and their experiences. Read more about the day, and its history, here.

“I think if I could have everybody take away one thing from this presentation it would be that the life many of us likely know and enjoy is not one that is often experienced by Indigenous communities,” Emma said, highlighting the lack of access to health care and clean water still experienced by Indigenous communities across Canada and the USA today. “The reality that is facing us is important so we can have the context to move forward – it’s called Truth and Reconciliation and this is the truth part, this is the reality”.

During the session, Emma shared sources and encouraged our DNEG teams tolive reconciliation by staying informed, and educated and being an active and supportive ally. Below are some of the resources that were shared during the session.

Thank you to Emma for leading us through such an enlightening and powerful session!
