New Virtual Reality action movie short redefines The Limit of immersive storytelling

Experience The Limit

Action movies just became a lot more immersive thanks to the release of award-winning filmmaker Robert Rodriguez’s new high-end Virtual Reality (VR) action movie short: The Limit.

This groundbreaking 20-minute VR film was produced by STXsurreal for its new high-end and paid-for VR content channel. Much of the action in this VR experience was brought to life with help from DNEG’s immersive content and VFX experts.

Go inside an action movie with virtual reality

The Limit uses an innovative first-person 220-degree video format technique to give viewers the chance to “go inside” the movie and feel like they are with the characters and part of the story.

Through a VR headset, the experience puts the viewer into the shoes of a rogue agent with a mysterious past who enlists the help of enhanced super-assassin M-13 (played by Michelle Rodriguez) to retrieve the viewer’s identity.

But the mission takes a twist and, as anyone familiar with the filmmaker’s work (which includes hits like From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City and Alita: Battle Angel) has come to expect, it quickly evolves into a thrilling ride, complete with car chases, shoot-outs and even a free-fall parachute jump from a burning aircraft – all filmed in first-person perspective.

Speaking about his first VR film, director Rodriguez says: “It’s very different from a video game type VR, because it’s got the language of film, it’s got the grain of film, it looks like a film, it sounds like a film, but now suddenly magically you are in the film.”

DNEG’s VR Journey

The Limit is the latest VR project that our teams have worked on. Earlier this year, we provided pre and post-production technical support on The Antarctica Experience, a unique 360-degree, stereoscopic documentary about life in the frozen continent. We have also developed CG 360 content to promote Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk and a promotional VR experience for The Meg.
