Sudharshana Shankar, FX TD

How would you describe the DNEG Greenlight program in three words?

Knowledgeable, practical & enlightening.

Which course did you undertake and how do you think it contributed to your success?

I underwent the FX study course, and it has contributed to an increase in my understanding of FX in the production environment, which I consider as my first step towards success.

What did you enjoy most about the work you were assigned during the Greenlight program?

The weekly tasks. Yes, every week we were given a task to create various kinds of FX from our learnings during the training sessions. I enjoyed working on them as it personally boosted my confidence as a FX artist.

What was the most difficult challenge you faced in the program and how did you tackle it?

My most difficult challenge was that I had no knowledge of programming since I come from an academic background in Commerce. To understand and implement VFX, basic knowledge of programming is required. Therefore, to comprehend it better I have started learning basic programming in “C” language. The training session on basics of programming helped me achieve a better understanding of the subject.

How did your Greenlight trainers and mentors support your learning and growth?

I am extremely happy to have trained under some of the very best Houdini experts the industry has to offer. The way the content & concepts were explained, to the ease with which our queries were answered sure has left a lasting impression. Most of the trainers were available at our beck & call to answer our queries & coach us. It’s one of the best training experiences I’ve had so far.

Why would you recommend the Greenlight Program?

I would recommend the Greenlight program to all the freshers out there. To learn something on our own or in a university is completely different compared to learning in a production environment. The amount of knowledge and understanding gained will be a lot more than anything that can be learned elsewhere. To be trained by industry experts and gaining knowledge through such a training program is 100% recommended.

What would be your advice to future Greenlighters?

My advice would be – never be afraid to make mistakes. In our industry and type of work, mistakes are good teachers – we make mistakes, we learn and we grow. Do not hold back on knowledge – sharing knowledge is as important as gaining it. Never be insecure about the amount of knowledge you have – it’s ok to even not have any, we have our whole life to gain it.
