The VFX of ‘The Last of Us’: Bringing to Life a Post-Apocalyptic World
Nick Marshall (DFX Supervisor) & Melaina Mace (CG Supervisor)
Online | Friday, April 28, 15:00 CEST
Join DNEG DFX Supervisor Nick Marshall and CG Supervisor Melaina Mace for an exclusive look at the visual effects work on one of the biggest and most-talked-about television series of the year, HBO’s The Last of Us, an adaptation of Naughty Dog’s video game phenomenon.
As a main vendor on several episodes, DNEG’s work focused on creating exterior environments that showcased American cities during and after modern civilization is forever changed by a sweeping infection. From Austin to Boston to Salt Lake City and Jackson Hole – the DNEG team grew ivy, constructed skylines, built mountains and destroyed buildings with the goal of bringing iconic locations from the video game to life. This talk will explore how the global team, led by the Vancouver studio, used extensive on-set photography and Lidar capture to turn real city blocks into abandoned wastelands interspersed with paramilitary checkpoints and quarantine zones. The team will also cover green screen window comps, interior environment extensions, and FX enhancements in this exciting presentation.

Our very own Gavin Graham (General Manager, DNEG Montréal and Toronto & Chair of the VES Work From Home Committee) is hosting this insightful panel covering all the implications of the “new normal” that has emerged since the global COVID-19 pandemic. In this panel, committee members will discuss various issues that have arisen from the industry trying to navigate this massive change: the benefits, the drawbacks, and the many logistical, security, financial, technical and practical challenges that need to be addressed in order to permanently establish this way of working into the future, and ask the question – is this way of working here to stay?
