‘Mr. Spam’ named ‘Best Animated Short’ at Cleveland International Film Festival!

Win Qualifies Short Film for Consideration at the Academy Awards

We are thrilled to share that DNEG Animation’s ground-breaking short film, Mr. Spam Gets A New Hat, has won the Best Animated Short Award at the Cleveland International Film Festival! The win is a big one as it qualifies the film for consideration in the Best Animated Short Film category at next year’s Academy Awards!

William Joyce, the film’s Academy Award-winning director, is honoured that his most personal film to date has captured the hearts of audiences everywhere and shared a touching message on his Instagram, thanking the crew for their hard work.

Congratulations to Bill and our talented DNEG Animation team, who developed a real time animation pipeline using Epic’s Unreal Engine to produce this game-changing short film. This was a new way of working that affected every aspect of the production. As Bill himself said, “The Epic game engine helped us rethink our production process and enabled us to move much faster and more intuitively. There were many times when I felt as though I was on a live action shoot… DNEG put together a flawless crew that were up for challenges and eager to embrace opportunities.

More good news? You can watch ‘Mr. Spam Gets A New Hat’ on the Cleveland International Film Festival’s website, as part of CIFF46 Streams On Demand until Sunday, April 17th, 2022. We hope you enjoy the film as much as we enjoyed making it!
