Academy Awards® shortlist

Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced its shortlist of projects in consideration for the next Visual Effects Academy Award®.

The selected titles were determined by the Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee and remain in the running for the 93rd Academy Awards®.

And the shortlist is:

Love and Monsters
Mank
The Midnight Sky

Bake-Off

All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view excerpts from each of the shortlisted films in March 2021.
Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar ® consideration.
The five finalists will be announced on 15 March.

93rd Academy Awards

The winners of the 93rd Academy Awards® will then be announced at the
Oscars® ceremony, is scheduled to take place on Sunday 25 April.

BAFTA longlist

Also recently announced were the fifteen long-listed films that will progress to Round Two of the 2021 EE British Academy Film Awards. And we couldn’t be any prouder!

In Round Two five nominees will be announced on 9 March, after which the general voting membership will select the winner, which will be announced on 11 April, 2021.

DNEG contributed to three of the long-listed titles for the 2021 EE British Academy Film Awards in the Special Visual Effects category:

Da 5 Bloods, The Invisible Man, Mank, The Midnight Sky, Mulan, News of the World, The Old Guard, The One and Only Ivan, Pinocchio, The Secret Garden, Sonic The Hedgehog and Soul

In total, 55 films were submitted for consideration.

Critics Choice Award nominations

On 8 Feb, the Critics Choice Association (CCA) announced the ‘Best Visual Effects’ film nominees for the 26th annual Critics Choice Awards and we are excited to be in the running with three DNEG titles out of seven nominations in total.  The Critics Choice Awards are bestowed annually to honor the finest in cinematic and television achievement. Historically, they are the most accurate predictor of Academy Award® nominations. The winners will be announced on Sunday 7 March.
